Plot summary
Led by its matriarch, Alma, the Madrigal family lives in Casita, a sentient house in a charmed, mountain-ringed region of Colombia called the Encanto. The candle that protects the village grants each Madrigal child a gift at the age of five, powers the family uses to serve their neighbors. Mirabel, the youngest daughter of Julieta, received nothing. At the celebration of her cousin Antonio's fifth birthday, where he is granted the ability to talk with animals, Mirabel notices cracks spreading through Casita and the candle's flame guttering. Her family sees nothing wrong once the house mends itself, and no one believes her. After she overhears Alma grieving over the fading flame, Mirabel decides to restore the house's magic herself.

- "We Don't Talk About Bruno" topped the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart, Disney's first chart-topper on the former this century and its first ever on the latter. Encanto thus became the first Disney film to produce both a number-one song and a number-one album.
- Alan Tudyk, considered Disney's "good luck charm", voices the toucan Pico in a cameo: when he first came into the recording studio he told the crew that their scratch vocals for Pico were parrots, not toucans. He spent hours imitating toucans, and would answer the team's English with toucan noises.
- Lin-Manuel Miranda knew from Moana that its protagonist originally had eight brothers, removed to streamline that plot, and expected Disney Animation to resist Encanto's dozen main characters. He deliberately wrote the opening number, "The Family Madrigal", to prove such a large family could be introduced efficiently.
- Disney Animation planned to send many of its animators to Colombia starting on March 15, 2020, but the trip had to be canceled after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The animators instead worked remotely with the Colombian Cultural Trust; Espinosa Uribe gave them a virtual tour of Colombia using her cell phone.
- Encanto was the first Disney Animation film to have choreographers involved in development from start to finish, working closely with the production team on songs, characters and story. Animation hired African-American choreographer Jamal Sims, who insisted on immediately hiring Colombian-American dancer Kai Martinez as animation reference consultant.
- The film is deliberately vague about its timeframe but drew inspiration from early-20th-century Colombia and a folkloric Colombian aesthetic. At the beginning of that century the country endured the Thousand Days' War, which sent the populations of entire villages fleeing to save themselves, as the film depicts.
- Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many crew members worked together remotely for over a year and did not meet each other in person until Disney held a socially distanced outdoor screening of the final version of the film.
