Plot summary
In 1964, Eileen Dunlop has a secretarial job at a Massachusetts corrections facility for teenage boys. Her coworkers keep their distance, and she spends idle moments imagining a guard named Randy. Her home life is strained: her father Jim, a former police chief, drinks, distrusts people, and berates her. Eileen often imagines killing herself and her father. When Rebecca Saint John arrives as the new psychologist, Eileen is attracted to her polished style and thoughtful talk. Rebecca begins working with Lee Polk, an inmate who killed his father. She invites Lee's mother, Anne, to meet with them, but the visit ends unhappily. That evening, Rebecca takes Eileen to a bar, where they drink and dance, and Rebecca kisses her before leaving.

- Ottessa Moshfegh brought her writer husband Luke Goebel into the screenplay, and the pair drafted it during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown while dodging seasonal wildfires from Oregon to Pasadena to Palm Springs. Moshfegh told Vanity Fair the sense of looming danger helped the writing.
