Plot summary
Earthlings is a documentary about the ways human beings use non-human animals as pets, for food, clothing, and entertainment, and in scientific research. Through hidden cameras, it presents footage from factory farms, puppy mills, pet shops, and research facilities, following the routines of large industries that depend on animals. The film also compares speciesism to racism and sexism. The project began in 1999 with material recorded in animal shelters in Los Angeles for public service announcements about spaying and neutering. What the footage showed led to a documentary instead, and obtaining further material from inside these industries took another six years.

- On July 21, 2020, a gunman seized a bus with 13 people in Lutsk, Ukraine, and demanded that President Volodymyr Zelensky post a recommendation of Earthlings; Zelensky complied within hours with a Facebook video saying "Everyone should watch the 2005 film Earthlings," and three hostages were released.
- Earthlings began as footage director Shaun Monson shot at animal shelters around Los Angeles in 1999 for public service announcements on spaying and neutering pets, until what he saw there moved him to turn it into a documentary. Getting footage from the industries took another six years.
