Plot summary
Near Spitzkoppe in Namibia, a sangoma named Joe Niemand tells of desert winds that take human form and hunt along the highways. One such wanderer is given a lift by Saarke Haarhoff, who takes him to her house; he kills her, covers the walls with pictographs and drives off in her car. In Bethanie, Sgt. Ben Mukurob answers a telephone call full of strange voices, and Dr. Leidzinger tells him the scene may belong to a witchcraft ritual. In Johannesburg, Mark Robinson accuses his wife Wendy of infidelity, so she leaves him and drives into Namibia. Joe tells Mukurob that the markings are the work of magic and Mukurob scoffs. Wendy runs her car off the road, then stops for a hitchhiker standing at the roadside.

- Richard Stanley's Dust Devil grew out of an unfinished 1984 student short of his about bizarre murders around the town of Bethanie. The real killer was never caught, locals blamed a supernatural force, and police later returned with a headless body they believed was his, buried in a grave marked "Nhadiep".
- A test screening of Dust Devil's 95-minute cut in Wimbledon left the audience "clearly confused" because the cuts had removed parts of the film's first act, Richard Stanley said; further cuts brought the running time down to 87 minutes.
- After Palace Pictures lost its money, director Richard Stanley personally financed a new version of Dust Devil with £15,000 and persuaded Polygram to have it ready.
- An 80-minute, ungraded cut of Dust Devil was shown in some European territories before 1994; Richard Stanley called it "an effort to liberate blocked funds" and said it was later withdrawn with the consent of all parties.
