Plot summary
Willowdean Dickson lives in a small Texas town and feels judged about her weight. Her mother, Rosie, is a former beauty queen who plans the yearly Miss Teen Bluebonnet Pageant, and she calls her daughter Dumplin'. Lucy, her aunt, raised Will for the most part, and she died six months before Will started her final year of high school. Ellen Dryver is Will's best friend. After Lucy's pageant application from age sixteen turns up, Will enters the contest to make a point. Ellen signs up too, along with classmates Millie Michalchuk and Hannah Perez.
