Biography

Lillian Hayman, an American actress and singer, began her career in Broadway theater after graduating from Wilberforce University with a BA. Born in Baltimore, she originated roles in several new musicals, among them Hallelujah, Baby!, Doctor Jazz, Kwamina, and 70, Girls, 70. Her performance in Hallelujah, Baby! brought her a 1968 Tony Award as best supporting actress in a musical. That performance led casting agents for the ABC soap opera One Life to Live to cast her as Sadie Gray, a role she played from 1968 until 1986. She briefly left the show to appear on The Leslie Uggams Show, a primetime musical comedy, and she also appeared on Broadway in 70, Girls, 70 in 1971. On screen, she portrayed Lucrezia Borgia in Mandingo (1975) and made her last feature film appearance in its sequel, Drum (1976). Hayman died in 1994.
