Plot summary
Hector Bloom is a college basketball star whose mind is not always on the game. Coach Bullion pays him special attention and wants him to commit to his ability, though Hector stays casual about it. He is sleeping with Olive, whose husband, Richard, is a professor and a friend of his, and he shares an apartment with Gabriel, who may have dropped out, takes drugs, rails against nearly everything around him, and is trying hard not to be drafted for Vietnam. Before a late-season game, the coach asks Hector to keep his mind on the court and cut the fooling around; Hector asks why he should. Gabriel disrupts a basketball game with a stunt of his own.
