Plot summary
When the War Minister Yu Qian is falsely accused of treason and put to death in Ming dynasty China, his family is exiled to a remote town in the northwest. Cao Shaoqin, the eunuch who controls the secret police, fears the surviving Yu family members will seek revenge, so he orders his men to kill them. That town is home to the Dragon Gate Inn, kept by Wu Ning, who once served under Yu Qian and takes it upon himself to protect them. He recruits three skilled martial artists, Hsiao Shao-Tzu and the siblings Chu Huei and Chu Chi, to help.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- After King Hu left Shaw Brothers, the studio sent Raymond Chow to Taiwan to demand distribution rights to his next four films from Union Film's Sha Youngfung, threatening a government investigation that could have had Hu blacklisted as a communist; Youngfung gave in.
- King Hu credited the combat choreography to Han Ying-chieh, later the villain of The Big Boss (1971); both trained in Peking Opera, and they designed the fight scenes to look more like ballets than plausible fights.
