Plot summary
Wang Zhen, a court eunuch, holds sway over the Emperor in 15th-century China and has gathered wide political power. The jinyiwei, the imperial secret police, answers to him, and he uses it to remove the men who oppose him. He orders Zhao Wuyi, chief of the jinyiwei, to execute three generals for treason, and Zhao Wuyi hands the task to his son Zhao Bufan, an officer of the guard. The generals are loyal men, framed for standing up to Wang, and Bufan kills only one of the three. He spares the other two and reports to his father that the mission is complete.
