Plot summary
Jade Li lives at home, where her father is strict and her mother dutiful, with her younger sister Pearl. The family keeps up a respectable public face and hopes penny stocks will bring prosperity. Jade lands a few bit parts on camera, works in a family friend's shop, and sits through dates her relatives arrange with prosperous young Chinese men. Her parents do not publicize her acting ambitions and expect her to marry a nice Chinese boy. Out with her friend Lisa one night, Jade meets Mark, a white university student, and sleeps with him. She leaves the next morning before he wakes so her parents will not learn she was out all night. Her car breaks down and needs a tow, so they find out anyway, and her father calls her irresponsible and imposes a curfew.
