Plot summary
Rivertown exiled Neil Stuart over his insistence that a riverbeast lives in the woods nearby, and reporter Sparky Watts wrote articles that made him a local laughingstock. He comes back for his god cousin's wedding, moves in with his old bandmate Teddy Hollingsworth, and learns that his former fiancée Emmaline Price is now engaged to Danny O'Grady, who is raising his son Bradley. Neil picks up tutoring work around town, including lessons for Allie Stone, a perceptive teenager and aspiring journalist whose grades at finishing school are slipping. With Allie encouraging him, he sets out to repair his name and win Emmaline back, starting with proof that the riverbeast exists, and he enlists big game hunter Ito Hootkins to help.
