Plot summary

Mrs. Tam is sixty-two and lives in San Francisco's Richmond District, where another Chinese New Year is coming around. A fortune teller has already told her that she will die this year, and she is thinking about what she wants to do first. She wants to see her daughter Geraldine married, and she wants to visit China to honor her ancestors. Geraldine remains unmarried. Her boyfriend lives in Los Angeles, and she is not sure she is ready for marriage. She also does not want to leave her mother on her own in her old age. Mrs. Tam's brother-in-law, Uncle Tam, cheerful, tries to help out.
