Plot summary
Jae-hyuk holds a doctorate in biochemistry but lost his savings and his job after a bad investment made on his younger brother's advice, and he now sells medical supplies. His brother Jae-pil is a detective. Dead bodies turn up floating in the Han River, and the deaths are traced to a mutated parasitic horsehair worm, Yeongasi, that takes over the human brain. The infected feel overwhelming hunger and thirst without gaining weight, and once the worms are ready to reproduce the victims enter the water. Authorities declare a national emergency as the deaths continue. Hospitals and pharmacies are overwhelmed by crowds seeking anthelmintics. Jae-hyuk's wife and children start showing the symptoms of the infection.
