Plot summary
In Royapuram, Mudaliar is held in high regard by his neighbors, and his son Billu is treated almost like a foster son by everyone in the locality. Billu sees Susi at a Chennai railway station and likes her at once. Susi has come from Bangalore and is to stay at the home of Settu, who once worked for her father Chidambaram, a criminal people fear; Settu has given up that life but still respects him. Susi has long wanted affection and attention, and the closeness the Royapuram residents share wins her over. She and Billu fall in love. A godman's prediction that Susi is the one meant for Billu takes her aback, and she worries what her father will do if the two grow closer.
