Plot summary
Anjali Rajamohan, a photographer, comes from London to shoot South Indian culture with her camera, against her father's wishes. Ajay has left his home near Theni to earn a living in the city and has just taken a job there. Narayanan, a broker, rents out empty houses without the owners' knowledge, and he takes rent from each of them for the same flat. Neither of them can find another house, so the two stay in the flat together, keep looking for Narayanan and squabble. Anjali is engaged to Deepak. Ajay's feelings for her grow, and he keeps them to himself.

- On the first day of filming Vanakkam Chennai, debut director Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi had contracted chikungunya, but she refused to cancel that day's shoot.
- Sunaina was initially set to play the female lead of Vanakkam Chennai, a role that ultimately went to Priya Anand.
- Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi faced criticism that Vanakkam Chennai was plagiarised from the 1955 film Missamma; she denied the claims as rumours, saying she had developed the story during her college days.
- Vanakkam Chennai was denied entertainment tax exemption ahead of release despite meeting the eligibility criteria; Udhayanidhi Stalin appealed in court, and as of 2016 the film still had not been granted it.
- The music video for the song "Chennai City Gangsta" was achieved with stop motion animation, which was created by Idea Heavens Studio.
- After finishing the script for Vanakkam Chennai, Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi had no intention of directing it and approached other directors, but none accepted; encouraged by M. Rajesh, she decided to direct it herself.
