Plot summary
Wan Tin-sau heads the community center in his village, where he gives acting lessons and hosts community plays. He also wants to act in films, though the only work he finds is as a movie extra, and he treats those small parts with a seriousness they do not call for. One day club girls come to him for help: they want to act like innocent schoolgirls so that customers pay them more. One of the girls, Piu-Piu, is skeptical about taking advice from an actor who has never risen above extra work. She takes the lessons anyway, and under his instruction she becomes a better actress.

SPOILER
The film ends with a blatant marketing plug for Pringles potato chips: the entire cast of the closing play rehearses backstage while stuffing their mouths with Pringles, with the logos of all five cans clearly facing the camera.- Some commentators say King of Comedy is based on Stephen Chow's own early career: he started off as a temporary actor before becoming a successful and popular comedy actor over the course of a decade.
