Plot summary
New York City short story writer Jennifer Hills settles into a rented cottage by a lake to write her first novel. Her groceries are delivered by Matthew, a shy local man who is mildly mentally disabled and is friends with Johnny, who runs the gas station, and with Stanley and Andy, two unemployed men who hang around the station. Matthew tells the three men about the woman he met and what he saw. Stanley and Andy then cruise past the cottage in their boat and creep around the house at night while keeping out of sight. One day, while Jennifer is out in her canoe, the two men surprise her, tow her to shore, and Johnny meets them there.

- Meir Zarchi was inspired to write and direct I Spit on Your Grave after an encounter in 1974 with a young woman who had been raped and beaten by two men in a New York City park.
- Australia banned I Spit on Your Grave for seven years until 2004, when the full uncut version won an R18+ after the Office of Film and Literature Classification reasoned that castration is not sexual violence.
- After the MPAA gave I Spit on Your Grave an R rating, the producer added rape scenes to make it X-rated; the dispute ended with the film removing references to anal rape so the MPAA restored the R.
- In the UK, I Spit on Your Grave sat on the Director of Public Prosecutions' list of prosecutable films until 2001, and cuts to its rape scenes fell from 7 minutes 2 seconds in 2001 to 2 minutes 54 seconds in 2011.
- Camille Keaton was one of more than 4,000 actresses who auditioned for the role of Jennifer Hills, which Meir Zarchi advertised in Backstage magazine along with four men in their 20s.
- Meir Zarchi wrote much of the screenplay on his subway commute home; his wife typed his handwritten pages at night, and the typewriter she used appears in the film as the one Jennifer uses.
