Plot summary
In 1997 the Florida ARKLAB circles Earth, a station the United States and Europe operate together, its microwaves able to steer weather anywhere and bring storms and floods to the ground beneath. Aboard it, astronauts Billy Hayes and Max Marek study how the climate can be influenced, and the two men spend months together in isolation. Max's wife, Eva Thompson, contacts the station to say she has decided to divorce him, the long separation having strained their marriage. A coup d'état in Saudi Arabia follows, and the American military takes over the civilian station. When the ARKLAB passes over Saudi Arabia, control comes from the ground and material is vented from the station; the controllers refuse to explain.
