Plot summary
John Brickner is paroled after four years of a seven-year sentence for second degree manslaughter and settles in Seattle, working construction by day and bouncing at a bar at night. Veronica Reynolds, whose husband he killed in self-defense, meets him; she had petitioned for his release after the apology letters he sent her. Her eight-year-old daughter, Sarah, needs a heart transplant, and Veronica says he should pay the $250,000 operation. With help from Frankie, a waitress at the bar, John tracks down fight promoter Reno Paulsaint, whose earlier offer he had refused. When he learns the job is underground fighting, he refuses again, though Reno promises six-figure earnings.

- While filming a fight scene on the Vancouver set, former wrestler Steve Austin broke the nose of real MMA fighter Paul Lazenby, one of several professional fighters hired to work the bouts.
- To make the underground-fighting scenes look authentic, the production hired real professional fighters as jobbers, opponents brought in to actually lose to the star, rather than choreographed stunt extras.
