Plot summary
The kidnappings in San Cristobal de las Casas, a small town in Chiapas, Mexico, are attributed to J-ok'el, a figure of local legend. In the Tzotzil language the name means weeping woman. Legend says she drowned her own children long ago, and that her spirit returned to take other children so she could forget her own suffering. George Christensen, an unworldly and closed-minded American, travels there to help his mother, from whom he is estranged. His half-sister has been abducted.
