Plot summary
Cult of VHS is a documentary about the videocassette and the collectors who still seek it out. Interviewees in the UK, the US, Mexico, Canada, Spain, Italy, France, Australia and the Netherlands talk about the video rental shops they remember, the cover artwork that shaped what millions of film lovers chose, and the top loaders, 3D VHS and straight-to-video horror they remember. The film looks at the social and cultural questions behind the new censorship laws of the eighties and nineties, and at the video nasties at the center of the censorship debate. It also asks why young adults are drawn to an obsolete format, and whether the interest in VHS is cyclical or lasting.

- Producer Kevin Proctor had scheduled an interview with Martin Myres, son of distributor Michael Myres, whose name John Carpenter took for The Shape in Halloween. The interview was canceled after a crew member tested positive for COVID-19.
- Director Rob Preciado developed Cult of VHS after suffering episodes of depression during the COVID-19 lockdowns, wanting a feel-good film about global views on VHS and people's home-video memories from different countries.
- Because of the first wave of the pandemic, most interviews were shot on location by the subjects themselves, including people in Italy, France, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and Mexico.
