Plot summary
Within days of meeting Doctor Robert Amour, Ann agrees to marry him. He is an orphan and a country doctor, and he takes her to Crow Hollow, the estate he is bound by a promise to his grandfather to keep, where his aunts Judith, Opal and Hester live. A gravely ill family friend warns Ann against the house and tells her not to let Robert bring her there, but is too weak to explain why. At Crow Hollow, Judith keeps zoological specimens and has received a large spider from Australia, while Hester makes a soup she gives out in the village. Hester remarks on Ann's slimness, and the aunts and Robert answer Ann's observations with nonsense. Willow, the maid, whom the aunts treat as one of the family, takes Ann's clothes.
