Nora Nicholson
Biography
Nora Nicholson was an English actress who built a long stage career before achieving her greatest success late in life in character roles. Born in Leamington, Warwickshire, she trained at Frank Benson's drama school, made her professional debut with his company in 1912, and went on to play Shakespearean roles with the Old Vic. She spent decades in character parts in England, France and North America, and wider notice came in the West End in 1947 with Dark Summer; she was later admired in The Lady's Not for Burning in London and New York. From the 1950s she appeared regularly on television, most memorably as Juley Forsyte in the BBC's The Forsyte Saga (1967), and in films including A Town Like Alice (1956). She published an autobiography in 1973 and acted until that year.

First role
Nicholson's professional stage debut came in April 1912. At the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, she played Dolly Clandon in Benson's production of Shaw's You Never Can Tell.
Behind the camera
In 1973, Nicholson brought out an autobiography called Chameleon's Dish. The Times described the book as quietly witty and generous.
