Plot summary
In 1930s England, St. Mathilda's is a strict elite boarding school for girls, where the diving team holds the highest standing among the students. The girls in Miss G.'s charge adore her, and Di, who leads her dormitory mates, is her firm favorite and nurses a crush on her. Then Fiamma arrives, a widely traveled and well-read Spanish aristocrat, an excellent diver whose asthma holds her back. She joins the squad, and the instructor's interest settles on the newcomer. Jealous, Di makes Fiamma's life at the school hard, and the other girls follow her lead, forcing Fiamma away from the team.
