Plot summary
Peter Littleton claims the woods near the family's London home as his own territory, while his sister Alice acts older than her years. On one excursion the two find an eagle feather and a wrecked boat. Their elder brother David dies during a storm while playing at pirates, and the household comes apart: Jack, a model maker, goes back to his gambling, and Rose means to sew the green felt hat she had planned to give David for his birthday. To pay what is owed, Peter and Alice take a silver pocket watch to sell, and give refuge to some street children who have robbed a frightening criminal. An odd shopkeeper, Hatter, steers them toward a money lender, Captain James.
