Plot summary
Sarah Norton is fifteen and lives in Toronto, where she is a student and hopes to become a writer. Paul, her boyfriend, stalks her, and she hides from him in a cafeteria, where she meets Ashley St. Clair, a painter of sixty. Ashley has not painted for ten years, not since his muse left him. He agrees to read the poems Sarah has written, and the two begin meeting at his studio. Sarah falls in love with him.

- Tatum O'Neal said her topless scene in Circle of Two "was a mistake" and that she would never do one again, and wrote in her autobiography A Paper Life that the premise was "a little pedophilic and creepy" and the seminude scene the worst part.
- Richard Burton wanted his dog to be given a first class seat on Air Canada to the New York shoot, and Melina Mercouri, the wife of director Jules Dassin, also wanted to take her dog along. A different airline was used instead.
- Securities commissions in Ontario and Quebec issued a cease-trading order against Circle of Two in September 1982, and in August 1983 240 of the film's investors filed a lawsuit in the Supreme Court of Ontario seeking $34 million. Other investors sued before a settlement was offered in 1987.
- The original score by Paul Hoffert was thrown out and replaced with a new one by Bernard Hoffer when Circle of Two was recut from 105 minutes to 98 minutes.
- Circle of Two was the final film directed by Jules Dassin, the filmmaker who was acclaimed for his work in film noir.
