In Poovar, Roy lives with his aunt while he attends twelfth grade, and he often skips his classes. His mother warns that she will take him home unless his marks improve, so his aunt brings in a tutor, Christy. Roy finds her troubled at their first lesson and reports to his aunt that something about her seems off, but he agrees to continue because an important exam has been arranged for him. Christy is unhappy after a recent divorce and is at odds with her father, Joseph, who repeatedly borrows large sums from her. Through the lessons the two become friends, and Roy falls in love with her.
