Plot summary
Christopher Isherwood leaves England for Berlin in 1931 against his mother Kathleen's wishes. On the train he meets Gerald Hamilton, who points him to the boarding house run by Fräulein Thurau, and in the city his friend Wystan Auden takes him to the Cosy Corner, a club crowded with hustlers. Christopher becomes friends with Jean Ross, an aspiring actress singing in an underground club, and takes up with Caspar, a rent boy. He pays his way with English lessons, one pupil being the wealthy Jewish department store owner Wilfrid Landauer, who presses him to take a political stand. Then Heinz, a street sweeper he spots from a café, enters his life, and while Heinz's mother looks kindly on Christopher, Heinz's brother Gerhardt, a Nazi sympathizer, does not.
