Plot summary
Cherry meets Emily at college and falls for her at once. They grow close, but Emily chooses to leave him and enroll in school in Montreal. Cherry joins the Army as a medic. Before he deploys, Emily tells him she loves him after all, and the two marry. During two years of service, Cherry lives through events that leave him with PTSD. Back home, a doctor prescribes OxyContin to ease his panic attacks and severe anxiety. His growing dependence frustrates Emily, who does not know how to help him without drugs and begins taking his medication herself. Both become addicted to OxyContin and then to heroin.

- The Russo brothers wanted to film Cherry in Ohio, the novel's setting and their home state, but tax-incentive changes proposed by the Greater Cleveland Film Commission pushed the shoot to California. After the proposed figures dropped from $100 million to $40 million, production returned to Ohio and filming began on October 8, 2019.
- Matt Gallagher of The Intercept wrote that Cherry and the book it adapts have been criticized for erasing the actual victims of the crime, including the bank teller Walker allegedly threatened to kill.
- Scenes were shot at St. Peter Chanel High School in Bedford, Ohio, before the building was demolished; the Russo brothers tweeted that it was the high school where their father obtained his education.
