Plot summary
Charlie Bartlett is a wealthy teenager who has been expelled from a string of private academies and now enrolls at Western Summit High, a public school headed by Nathan Gardner, an alcoholic principal. Charlie is diagnosed with ADHD and struggles to make friends. He approaches Murphy Bivens, the school bully, and proposes a partnership: Charlie will obtain prescription drugs by pretending to be ill during appointments with psychiatrists, and Bivens will help him sell them, splitting the money. The scheme works, and word spreads. Charlie becomes the school's resident therapist, hearing students' problems in the boys' bathroom and handing out advice along with medication. His standing among his classmates improves, and he begins seeing Susan Gardner, the principal's rebellious daughter.
