Plot summary
Melanie Adams had twin daughters, Val and Jessica, at nineteen and built a career as a news correspondent in New York City. Her latest assignment takes her to Los Angeles to report on a sick girl, and she feels an immediate attraction to the girl's doctor, Peter Hallam, a widower with three children of his own, eighteen-year-old Mark, fifteen-year-old Pam and eight-year-old Matt. The family is still mourning Peter's late wife, and Pam struggles most with the loss. Melanie and Peter part and then decide they cannot live apart, so she gives up her job and her chance at an anchor chair and moves with Val and Jessica to Los Angeles, where she becomes co-host of a local news program and the other co-host, Paul Stevenson, resents her arrival.
