Plot summary
Kate Parker leaves her friends and her little sister Bella in Detroit and travels to New York to audition for the American Ballet Academy, the school she has always wanted to dance for. Suzanne Von Stroh is picked instead, after the academy's director Jonathan Reeves and the teacher Cooper Nielson, back at the school since his ballet company lost its funding, argue over the choice. Tommy Anderson, another dancer, had been convinced Kate got in. With nowhere to stay, Kate arrives at the club, and her dancing wins over both Tommy and the owner, Sal, who is Tommy's best friend; he gives her a job and the upstairs office to sleep in. Because she needs an apartment, she agrees to coach Tommy in exchange for his paying her.
