Plot summary
Delia Byrd left her husband, Clint Windsor, after he tried to kill her, and spent years on the road with a rock band. In Los Angeles she raised a daughter, Cissy, with Randall Pritchard. After Randall dies, Delia returns to her small Georgia hometown, where she is not welcome. Clint is ill and wants to remain in his own house, so Delia offers to look after him if her two daughters come back to her. Grandma Windsor, who brought them up, guards them: Amanda, sixteen and a born-again Christian, and Dede, fourteen, a singer who takes after her mother. Cissy finds rural southern life hard to get used to.
