Plot summary
After the overture, the cats introduce the Jellicle tribe and explain how its members are named. Victoria, a young white kitten, dances a ballet solo to signal the start of the Jellicle Ball, and Munkustrap, the main narrator, says that Old Deuteronomy will appear and choose one cat to be reborn on the Heaviside Layer. Jennyanydots is introduced first, a large tabby who lazes by day and teaches mice and cockroaches at night. The Rum Tum Tugger then makes an extravagant entrance; he is fickle and unappeasable. Grizabella, a shabby old gray cat, wants to be reconciled with the tribe, and the other cats draw back from her in fear and disgust.

- For the film, the cast recorded their vocals first, then performed the entire show twice while 16 cameras captured it from multiple angles, followed by a few weeks of close-up and pick-up shots.
- Restaged on a new set and filmed without an audience for television, the production was cut from the stage show's 2 hours 40 minutes to just under two hours: the whole of "Growltiger's Last Stand" was dropped, along with parts of "The Invitation to the Jellicle Ball" and "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer".
