Plot summary
Casting By looks at the work of casting directors, a craft the documentary calls one of the most overlooked in filmmaking. Through interviews, archival footage, animated stills and documents, the documentary follows Marion Dougherty, whose instincts and taste brought a different kind of actor to the screen. That change came as the old studio system was ending and a new period in American film was beginning. The film traces the profession across half a century, from type-casting under the studios to large ensemble films and varied casts. Dougherty died before the release, and the film is dedicated to her memory.
