Plot summary
At Whipstaff Manor in Friendship, Maine, a lonely ghost named Casper has spent a century hoping for a friend. The house is also home to his uncles, the Ghostly Trio, Stretch, Stinkie and Fatso, whose idea of fun is driving people off. Carrigan Crittenden inherits the manor from her father and finds papers pointing to a treasure hidden inside, so she and her lawyer, Dibs, set out to get the ghosts out. Every attempt fails. Watching a news report on paranormal therapist James Harvey, Casper becomes smitten with Harvey's daughter Kat and nudges Carrigan to bring the Harveys to Whipstaff. James keeps trying to reach his dead wife, Amelia, and Kat dislikes his fixation. When Casper greets the newcomers, they see him, and his uncles set about tormenting them.

- Industrial Light & Magic created the ghosts with computer-generated imagery, making Casper the first feature film to have a fully CGI character in a leading role.
- In the mirror scene, Dr. Harvey was meant to transform into Spielberg. Director Silberling filmed the cameo but cut it for pacing, and Spielberg was relieved, feeling he is not much of an actor and was nervous in front of the camera.
- Alex Proyas initially signed on to direct Casper but left over creative differences with the screenplay; he had wanted a darker children's fantasy, akin to The Wizard of Oz.
- The track "One Last Wish" went on to accompany Universal Pictures' "Logos Through Time" montage for the studio's centennial anniversary, and "Descent into Lazarus" was used in a trailer for How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
- Casper's success secured its director Brad Silberling the job of directing the 1998 film City of Angels, a remake of Wings of Desire.
