Plot summary
Mike Pillsbury is certain he is an alien trapped in the wrong world. After he is injured in a football game and sees an alien in a hallucination, his father Dana, a former football player, wants him to continue with the sport. Katelyn Sandman, one of the popular girls at school, asks Mike to help decorate for a Halloween dance party, where Scott Schriebner, Mike's rival on the football team, wrecks the lights and music equipment. Mike leaves and asks outer space for a rescue through a satellite dish; lightning destroys the dish. A day later an alien dog called Barnabus arrives, speaking through a translator, and tells him his message opened a stargate door. Barnabus represents a galactic disaster relief and rights group and has come for Mike, while other aliens travel through the stargate too.

- Kathy Mackel was replaced by a new writer after her first rewrite of the film's script, but after three more rewrites Disney rehired her, using very few of her suggestions. Mackel then fought for and won sole screenwriting credit through Writers Guild arbitration.
- Can of Worms holds a small place in Disney Channel history: it was the first of the channel's original movies to be given a TV-PG rating rather than a more family-friendly one.
