Plot summary
In 1959 Conrad Birdie, a wildly popular rock and roll singer, is drafted into the army. Birdie's manager and songwriter, Albert Peterson, and Albert's girlfriend, Rose Alvarez, are caught in the upheaval. Rose wants Albert to give up music and train as an English teacher, while his mother, Mae, wants him to keep running Al-mae-lou, the studio she and Albert created. Rose proposes one last publicity stunt before Birdie goes: one fan, drawn from a list, will receive his goodbye kiss and hear him sing on live television. In Sweet Apple, Ohio, Kim MacAfee is the fan selected, and the town's phone lines are jammed because Kim has just been pinned to Hugo Peabody. Hugo fears that Birdie's arrival will take Kim from him.
