Plot summary
Rene travels with her cousin Zane, his friend Phil, her boyfriend Danny, and two sorority pledges, Julie and Laura, to the family home in New Mexico, where Zane wants to research the family's history. Julie and Laura have been ordered to dress as animals as part of their initiation. Lester, the caretaker, lives in a trailer on the land and searches for gold; he shows the students his stuffed animals and tells them not to enter the subcellar or go outside after dark. Rene dreams of drowning and sees an old woman above her, and Zane keeps seeing an old woman along the road, once in the middle of it, which nearly causes a crash.
