Plot summary
Peg Dahl grows up in Buffalo, New York, in a poor blue-collar family, and takes after her late father's habit of hustling for money. She studies economics and runs small moneymaking schemes, dreaming of an Ivy League education and a career on Wall Street. Accepted to a good college she cannot afford, she sells counterfeit tickets to Bills games, is caught, and receives a forty-month sentence. Released from prison, she cleans toilets at her brother J.J.'s bar, then hustles her way into a local debt collection firm that erases her legal debt. Graham, who works for the district attorney and is investigating Buffalo's debt collection racket, meets her at the bar one night.
