Plot summary
Brian Gittins lives by himself in the Welsh countryside, filling a workshop with machines that mostly refuse to work. While collecting scrap he picks up a mannequin's head, and it gives him the notion of building an artificially intelligent robot. The finished machine stays lifeless until a thunderstorm passes over, when he finds it up and moving in the yard and takes it inside. By the next morning it has picked up English from a dictionary and settled on a name for itself: Charles Petrescu. Brian plays with him and shows him the property, but the childlike Charles wants to see what lies past the fields. Brian tells him he has to stay near the house.
