Plot summary
Keith Reynolds set aside a career as a musician when his daughter Lauren was born, and now he teaches music at a high school in a small town ninety minutes from New York City. He fills in as a cellist in an orchestra and hopes for a permanent chair there; his wife Megan disliked the uncertainty of a musician's income and refuses to consider a move back to the city. The family takes in Sophie, an exchange student from England, for one semester, and Sophie is disappointed to find herself far from Manhattan. Her mother died when she was young and her uncle and aunt raised her; her uncle gave her the piano, and his recent death has left her without a reason to practice. Sophie is an accomplished musician, and she and Keith talk about music together.
