Plot summary

Aaron Averhart, eight years old and a year short of moving up from Cub Scouts, gets a special request from William (Bill) Sheehan, a Boy Scout leader he admires. Sheehan keeps his attention on Aaron as the boy rises through the Scout ranks, and what the leader has in mind for him is not what Aaron or his parents take it to be. The files the Boy Scouts of America kept since the 1920s on men in its ranks were never passed to parents, the police or the scouts themselves, and the men were not always removed from the program. Aaron's parents knew nothing of any of it and would not have let him join had they known.
