Plot summary
Two American F-35 fighters enter Chinese airspace and damage an oil refinery. Lei Yu intercepts them in a Chengdu J-10 and pushes the jet hard; the intruders withdraw, and engine trouble forces him to land in an emergency. Superior officers question his flying, and the command weighs how far foreign fifth-generation fighters outmatch their fourth-generation fleet. Zhang Ting offers Lei Yu a place in the secret Chengdu J-20 effort. He accepts, and at the testing site he and other pilots compete for seven test pilot spots, where he renews a rivalry with Deng Feng.
