Plot summary
Witek Długosz is studying medicine in Poland in 1981 when his father dies. He asks the university for a year's leave to decide whether medicine is his calling, then sets out for Warsaw. At the Łódź Fabryczna station he runs for the train, and the outcome splits the story three ways. In one, he catches it, meets Werner, an old Communist, and joins the Party; he also runs into Czuszka, his first love. In another, he crashes into a man drinking beer, knocks a railway guard down and is sentenced to thirty days of unpaid community work, falling in with the anti-Communist resistance and his childhood friend Daniel. In the third, he misses the train, finds Olga on the platform, and goes back to his medical studies and to her.
