Plot summary
Blaze is a twelve-year-old girl who lives with her father, Luke, in a Paddington terrace house, sleeping in a room in the roof space beside a cabinet of small china animals and a white china dragon. Zephy, a ceiling-high dragon with a long snout and crocodile teeth, is her imaginary friend. Returning from the shops by a service lane, she hides and watches Jake throw Hannah to the ground and rape her; she runs home and says nothing to Luke. Her phone was found at the scene, so the police treat her as a possible witness, and she is fingerprinted, swabbed and examined by a woman doctor. Two weeks later Jade, a police psychologist, interviews her.
