Plot summary
Recently unemployed and divorced, the screenwriter Boyd 'Bo' Aikens leaves Los Angeles hoping to start over. He stops for lunch in Black River, an ordinary-looking town, then changes his mind after a disturbing encounter with one of the locals. As he drives out, his cell phone rings and an unidentified caller scolds him for his unpleasantness. Police pull him over and arrest him because his car is listed as stolen. His car is towed out of town before the matter is settled, so he spends the night in Black River.
