Plot summary
England, 1348, as the Hundred Years War continues. A group of soldiers rides back to the estate of Lady Matilda Mellerby with word that her husband, Sir Walter de Mellerby, has been captured and is a hostage in France. Nicholas, the nephew of her husband, leads the soldiers, and they have brought a prisoner with them: Jacques de Saint Amant, son of the man holding Sir Walter. He can be traded for Sir Walter along with an additional ransom, money that would rescue the estate from the bankruptcy its debts threaten. When Lady Matilda asks the bishop for more time to raise the money, he says that without it he wants sexual favors from her instead.
