- As the film grew popular, Starbucks flew Tadesse Meskela and four other African coffee producers to its Seattle headquarters for a weekend conference many saw as a PR stunt. Just before the London Film Festival premiere in October 2006, an internal Starbucks memo calling Black Gold “incomplete and inaccurate” leaked to the film's forum.
- Tadesse Meskela, the main character in Black Gold, was afterwards able to increase the market price for his cooperative union's coffee, and was invited to 10 Downing Street, where he took his message directly to Tony Blair.
