Plot summary

Khalid Belkacem is 25, French of Maghrebi origin, and every one of his graduation exams has ended in failure. College, a summer camp instructor's permit, a driver's license and a BCG have all gone the same way. One opening remains to him, though he never pictured it: a place in the police force, which takes him on as its first recruit under a positive discrimination scheme. His mother's verdict on the country is that a chance exists here for everyone. On the job he is teamed with Mamadou and Henri, and the case the three are handed concerns a serial killer who acts on Fridays in the banlieue.
